Lake District Tours

The Lake District, in Cumbria, North West England, is an area of incomparable beauty and variety. Many areas of the Lake District form a National Park. It has the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike at 3210 feet, with more than 180 lesser peaks and fells over 2000ft. Lake Windermere, at over 10 miles long and 230 feet deep, is also England's largest. Fifteen other lakes and numerous small reservoirs make this a nature-lovers' and walkers' paradise. For those of a literary bent, this area has provided inspirations for the poets Thomas Grey, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The writer Beatrix Potter and artist John Ruskin also have close associations with the area.

The southern area of the region is characterised by narrow switchback lanes and tranquil lakes that recede far into the distance. Lake Windermere is a popular centre for boating and sailing as well as being a major scenic attraction. Marvellous views of the Langdale Pikes and other famous Lakeland features can be enjoyed from the peaceful shores of the picturesque Tarn Hows.

Further north, tranquil Rydal Water contrasts with the constant bustle and activity of Lake Windermere but both are renowned for their excellent fishing and are home to many wildfowl. Dove Cottage in Grasmere, once the home of Wordsworth, is now a museum containing examples of his work and various personal belongings.

The northern reaches of the Lake District is an area of beautiful mountains and lakes, heathery slopes dotted with sheep and boulders between valley woodland and windswept crags. Remember to take 'wet weather gear' as the lush country around Seatoller suffers higher than average rainfall! Buttermere Lake, set amid mountains, is one of Lakeland's most beautiful areas and is famous for it's reflections visible on a calm day.
